  LiveAdvice: Message Boards & Chat

Use the power of the Internet to connect with people and bring them to your listings on LiveAdvice! With great Internet communication tools like chat rooms, forums, message boards and newsgroups on any subject imaginable, you can tap into a whole new pool of potential customers.

What is a chat room?
A chat room is a place where two or more people can have a typed conversation in real time. In a chat room, the messages you and other people type are shown instantly to everyone else in the room.

What is a forum?
A forum, or message board, is a static area where particular topics are discussed. You or other members enter a typed message and submit it to the message board for everyone to read, and others can reply to the posting.

What is USENET?
USENET is a decentralized, worldwide network of newsgroups (also called forums or message boards) on over tens of thousands of different topics. Not all USENET machines are on the Internet. Newsgroups are names with a series of words and periods. For example, rec.pets.dogs.breeds is a place where people discuss every breed of dog from pit bulls to Chihuahuas (the "rec" is short for "recreation").

What is Netiquette?
Netiquette is short for "network etiquette." Since many people communicate through the Internet, there is a set of guidelines that explain proper behavior when emailing, chatting, posting or replying to articles. Netiquette means much more than just being polite - it can help you avoid misunderstandings and get your message across without offending anyone in the process.

Following are a few basic rules of Netiquette:

  • No insulting, degrading or racist remarks.

  • Keep your communications in newsgroups or a mailing list to the point; some people pay for Internet access by the hour.

  • Be wary of the newsgroup's rules on posting ads -- some welcome them, some hate them. If you post an ad to a newsgroup, or send it in an email, clearly identify it in the subject line. That way people who aren't interested can delete it.

  • Remember that anything you post to a newsgroup or type during a chat session is a public comment. You never know who's reading it, or who may copy it and spread it around.

  • Don't ask commonly-asked questions in a newsgroup, or questions that aren't related to the mailing list.

  • Avoid writing email messages or posting in newsgroups using all caps. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE SHOUTING!

What should I tell potential customers?

  • What services you offer on LiveAdvice, and how it relates to them (the message board topic, etc.)

  • Your LiveAdvice home page address. If you don't know what it is, sign in and go to My Account. Look for a link to your home page under Tools.

  • It's FREE to join LiveAdvice, and the first 3 minutes of their first LiveAdvice with you will be FREE!
