5 Ways to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

‘Comfort zone’ doesn’t really sound like such a bad thing, right? Ice cream, fried chicken, a warm sleeping puppy, and the sound of Bob Ross’ voice all funder under the category of comforting, so why would comfort zone be a bad thing?

The comfort zone is a state within which someone operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, delivering a steady level of performance (usually without a sense of risk). When it comes to your life on this Earth, staying within this area means keeping yourself from becoming the best version of yourself as possible. Habit and fear keep us in our comfort zones, but daring to take steps outward can help you achieve unimaginable things and live your life to its fullest capability.

Here are 5 ways to get out of your comfort zone:

1. Look Within

Take a moment and try to look at yourself. Not in the mirror. Really look at yourself and think about who you are, and why you are. Are you the person you want to be? Grab a piece of paper and start a list of the things you feel you’re doing right and also the things you need to do to become the person you want to be. Recognize that only you can make change happen for yourself and your life, and appreciate that awesome fact! Every day, look at one thing on that list and try to work until you’ve changed it for the better. Once you’ve made that positive change, move on to the next.

2. Examine at Your Habits

Take a good look at your day and identify your habits. Is your current behavioral state giving you the space to create what you want? Is it bringing you new opportunities? Is it allowing you to think or dream bigger? If your answer is ‘no’ to any of the above, then consider slowly attempting to alter your current habits.

3. Do Something Different

We know this sounds simpler than it actually is, but it’s all practice. Every day, try to do at least one thing differently. The results of this practice are huge. Are you a shy person? Try to introduce yourself to someone new. Afraid of public speaking? Try talking to a small group of people. Attempting to do something we normally wouldn’t is taking a huge leap out of our comfort zones, slowly allowing you to overcome your fears and expand the possibilities for yourself and your life.

4. Be Yourself

Always be true to yourself. Don’t take up new habits if they don’t feel right or speak true to who you are. When taking steps out of your comfort zone, always make sure you believe the direction you’re taking is positive. Being scared is one thing, being uncomfortable is another.

5. Slow Down

To really get the most out of all our moments, remember to breathe and live in the moment. Stop worrying about mistakes you’ve made or opportunities you’ve missed—they can’t be changed. Don’t worry about the future—it’s not guaranteed. Focus on today. Focus on enjoying every moment and learning as much as you can as you continue to focus on growing into the person you want to be. Appreciate everything this moment holds, even if it’s not quite what you want it to be yet. You’ll get there. 

Getting out of your comfort zone and changing your life may seem daunting, but to do so is to grow. Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from achieving greatness for yourself and your life. You may very well be happy with your life as it is now, but is there something bigger you would like to do? Take that step and do it. A whole new world of experiences is out there waiting for you to grasp them.
